Map YOUR Coalition
Map YOUR Coalition Fill it in for your own issue — worked here with Lincoln Elementary vs. the Ironton plant Data Activism · The Multiverse School THE CONCEPT · EVERYONE ALREADY SITS SOMEWHERE ON THIS SPECTRUM ALLIES thin PERSUADABLES the fat middle — your energy goes here OPPONENTS thin 1 · MAP YOUR PEOPLE three lists · be specific — names and orgs, not “the community” A LIST YOUR ALLIES Already agree. You need coordination, not convincing. Open with “How can I help?” MY ALLIES — WORKED • Lincoln Elementary PTA — parents already organized, they hold the mailing list • Local Clean Air group — has testified at every Air District hearing for years B LIST YOUR PERSUADABLES Haven't thought about it yet. Your data + framing goes HERE — the biggest, most winnable slice. MY PERSUADABLES — WORKED • Parents who haven’t connected their kid’s asthma to the plant • Homeowners near the plant — worried about property value, not yet about the air • The school nurse — sees the inhalers, hasn’t seen the PM2.5 data ← SPEND YOUR ENERGY HERE C LIST YOUR OPPONENTS Benefit from the status quo. Know their arguments so you can counter them — don’t try to convert them. MY OPPONENTS — WORKED • The Ironton plant — leans on the “jobs and tax base” argument • State manufacturing trade lobby — fights every new emissions-reporting rule 2 · THE ASK LADDER for a specific person, what’s your NEXT ask? match the ask to where they are — don’t skip rungs BIGGER ASK 1 AWARENESS plant the seed — get the issue into their head RUNG 1/4 THE ASK: “Did you know [one sentence]?” WORKED: “Did you know the school is 400m from the plant, and PM2.5 there runs 3× the EPA limit?” 2 INTEREST give them something concrete to chew on RUNG 2/4 THE ASK: share the one-pager · give them the number WORKED: Text her your one-pager: 47 bad-air days last year, mapped to the Ironton plant. 3 COMMITMENT one small, specific, bounded yes — not “fight for justice” RUNG 3/4 THE ASK: “Would you sign this?” WORKED: “Would you sign the comment letter to Chair Ruiz?” — she signs. 4 ACTION the real ask — and only after the first three rungs RUNG 4/4 THE ASK: “Show up at [place] on [date].” WORKED: “Come to the Air District hearing, Nov 14, 6pm.” — she’s in the room. START HERE One persuadable parent, climbed rung by rung: Awareness → Interest → Commitment → Action. THE COMMON MISTAKE Jumping straight to ACTION on someone who’s never heard of your issue. “Come to the hearing!” means nothing to a parent who doesn’t know the plant is there. Meet people where they are — each rung builds the next.
